The process I’ve used to create these designs is known as marquetry. I am using wood veneers, about 1/28” thick, of a variety of species to get the effect that I ’m after. Marquetry is similar to inlaywork, but differs in that the whole design is created in veneer form, then glued down to the surface in one step. Inlay is more of a process of routing pieces into the background material one at a time. Most of the cutting of the veneers is done on a scroll saw with a very fine blade. The cutting is slow, meticulous, and at times risky. The results are worth the effort.
